Or the splines on the pot to driveshaft joint... seen that one before too...

Best option is to get it up on stands and have a butchers.

All depends what it is...

best thing to do is, with the assistance of someone, get it in the air, stick it in gear, one hold one wheel and try and turn the other... see what, if any, parts move and what parts don't.

This should be with the engine switched off as a safety precaution!!!!
Initially with it in the air and in gear - it doesn't matter which - rotate one wheel and see if the other turns the opposite direction. i.e. if you rotate the left front in a forward direction, the right front shoul turn in a reverse direction.
If the other wheel doesn't spin, try pushing the driveshaft towards the centre of the car and if necessary turning it a little. I had a car which drove ok for months and then when I got the car out of a lockup garage and turned hard right, the left hand driveshaft inner joint popped itself out just enough to disengage the splined from the diff. A quick shove and it was back in. Neighbour's Rover 400 did the same because he worked on it and forgot to put the circlip back on thinking the suspension would hold it in place. He didn't realize the driveshaft was able to move in and out slightly.

If it is that, then it would more than likely need a new circlip on the inner joint splines where it enters the differential unit.
Basically it is a circular piece of steel 'wire' which compresses as it passes through the diff as you push it in (it may need some assistance to centre it and guide it in). Once the driveshaft is fully in, the clip returns to it's normal shape and keeps the inner driveshaft joint locked in place.
Usually, to get them out, you require the inner joint removal tool (which basically is a flat plate with a large cutout to suit the shape of the joint and it has a small block welded to the back). You put this on with the small blaock towards the gearbox and hit the flat plate end with a hammer. This then pops the 'unlocks' the circlip and allows the joint to be removed.
A long prybar can be used but may cause damage to the gearbox casing if care is not taken.
The circlip sits in a groove near the end of the inner cv joint.
They don't cost much and it is usually recommended to change them when the joints are removed.

sounds like the mainshaft nut has backed off allowing the diff drive wheel gear to con off the spline..iv'e had this happen twice in the past
