I'm thinking of rebuilding my N/A HIF 44 with a service kit (not the 'full rebuild kit') whilst I'm away at university. How difficult is this job. and is there anything that can't be done at home? Also where can I find a guide on this procedure (preferably without having to purchase it)? Finally, are there any parts of the carb that would need setting up after this had been completed. i.e. tolerances to be set?
I don't really want to jump in a cause more harm than good, as the carb itself has no real issues in it's present state.
thanks in advance...

Perfectly doable if you take your time and take plenty of good ;ictures to show you how it fits together, particularly pay attention to the return springs and how they clip into place as you do it :D

Get yourself the Haynes manual for the SU carbs as well, I did mine and it was really easy.

The question occurs, if it's not broken why are you doing it?

Never touch a runing system >_<

I was told to not use the fibreglas washer for the float's shaft suplied in some kits.
Seemingly they have the nasty habit of leaking after a while (fuel on hot exhaust) :dontgetit:
As said I was only told - but it sounded credible.

The rebuild is easy. But take care with the choke's o rings (by the way; some HIFs have two o-seals, some have one and a paper gasket).
Don't damage them.

When it starts to need to be adjusted a long way to bring it into tune, appears to need tuning often or is obviously damaged it needs overhauling. If it still works, comes into good tune easily and keeps in tune from one service to the next then it's fine. Essentially, when people come on here saying 'I've been told I need a new carb' they mean they need to buy a repair kit.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm looking to rebuild it as I have no idea of the mileage of the unit, and it was always difficult getting into tune. I've added a few new parts to my car recently and want to get it RR'd so I thought a nicely rebuilt carb would smooth the operation and leave my car running well.

I'm in the same boat at the moment, i have no idea of the condition of my carb and want to refurb as much as i can on my new engine before it gets put in - The idea being to have everything running smooth and eliminate any problems before they can occur. I like knowing how things work and like things clean and smooth operating

On the other hand i don't want to create problems by doing it wrong...

Just rebuilt my hif44 as part of a full engine overhaul. It will now only start on full choke and revs straight to 3k. Its not an issue with the idle adjustment ad the butterfly is barely open so figured its an air leak. I figure too much air + extra fuel from choke = revs.
Started by checking each of the connecting hoses and found that when i block the overflow the revs drop right off and after a few seconds it stalls.
So have had the carb off to adjust the float, figured not enough fuel in the body so air can be drawn through. The float is in spec as per the Haynes manual...... any ideas?
