Ever since I picked up my '95 Jap import 1275 Cooper the fuel gauge has read zero. When I picked it up from the docks I got panicked that it would run out so put 10 litres in and needle didn't move, then the other day I brimmed it and it's still sitting at empty
Could it be the sender unit or is there anything else I can check????
Thanks

Take the 2 spade terminals off the side of the fuel tank and connect them together with a paper clip. With the ignition on the fuel gauge should then read full.
If it does, then your tank sender is knackered.
If it still refuses to move, then it could be a fault with the wiring or the gauges themselves.
Unfortunately the Nippon Seiki type gauges don't have a replaceable voltage regulator on the back (like what the old Smiths instruments did). So you'll either have to send the gauge off to be fixed or replace it?

Our Equinox mini isn't getting used much at the mo (it can sit for months) and the fuel gauge always used to work fine.
The past couple of times I took it out for a run I noticed that the fuel gauge was showing empty. The tank had been left virtually empty for a while so on Saturday I filled it up with a good 10 litres and took it for a drive. It still showed empty but after I vigorously took the mini round some bumpy, twisty and tight country lanes the fuel level suddenly popped up. I think in the instance the fuel sender had just got stuck.
