Hello all i have just got one of these to try my hand at welding

http://www.sip-group...atalogue/14.pdf

The problem is some of the welding i need to do is in a garage that has no power, has anyone else hired or purchased a generator that you can use for running a welder, 2.0kw generators do not seem to bad to buy new or like this one on fleabay
http://cgi.ebay.co.u...hlink:middle:uk
but will this be OK.

Cheers for any help.

Steve.

Think i might hire one of these when i am ready for some welding,

i will just have to cut out the rust and make up the patch panels first so i do not have to hire it fo to long, man wish i had a bloody garage at my house.

I have a 4kva genny, and it can just run my mig welder. Its harder to weld though, and the welds are noticeably poorer, plus it has a habit of stalling the genny every now and then. I use it for fixing up gate posts etc. (by the way, the arc welder is noticeably better running from the genny) but wouldnt even consider doing bodywork with it.
To say nothing of the incredibly annoying noise - it really gets tedious very quickly, and if there are houses nearby, the residents WILL hate you.

It would be much, much better if you could run power to the garage - even if it takes a couple of extension reels, from your own house or from a neighbouring house in return for a few beers/money etc.

Oh, and if you do go the generator route, watch the ratings carefully. The quoted power output is normlly its PEAK power, which can be sustained for short periods, you need to check that its CONTINUOUS power, which is often as much as a third lower, is up to your needs.

Good answers- this solves a quandary I was in too.
I think the beer money priced electricity from a neighbouring house may be the plan...

Well my garage is over a mile from my house so no way can i run a lead to it, i only need to weld on two small patches on the sills, a section on the boot floor and the rear valence so it is only for a very short time so i hope not to make to much noise, i have a small 950w 2 stroke at the garage which i run my power tool off and that is very quite just wish the grinder was the same, i only do work at times when i hope people wont mind to much and only for short periods of time.
I guess i could move house but with the amount that would cost i could buy a bloody good mini or two.

That should handle the power needs, apears to be 4.5kva continuous and 5.5kva pea. But I'm not sure if it has the right sockets on it though.
