Auto's are great until the gearbox goes pop... then you'll be facing the choice of a VERY expensive garage bill ( probably more than the car is worth ) or converting the mini to a manual.

It is essential that an auto is religiously serviced, an oil change every 3k miles is recommended.

Buying an auto can be a bit hit and miss, service record is essential ( for the above reasons ) and also has a adverse effect on the retail value, if you have an auto and are trying to sell, you best hope there's someone looking for one. If not, then expect to be receiving considerably less than a manual equivalent.

Our open top mini is Automatic and it's used only in summer time with the roof down. Therefore we never need to go fast and we're after relaxed driving... therefore the Auto box suits the car perfectly.

As GuessWorks mentioned, make sure you give it frequent oil changes. Our open top mini does about 500 Miles per year and we make sure to give it an oil change each year we get the car out.

I like my mini auto - although it has the 1275 and 4 speed box from a Metro, with Cooper carb and exhaust. Essentially a Cooper auto. I just chill in it most of the time, but if I want to buzz it round the lanes I can use it like a tiptronic. Good fun, but like I say, I mostly just stick it in drive and off I go. Strange thing is, when I was looking for an auto I couldn't find a good one anywhere, and when I did they went for daft money. Obviously if you compare it to a late Cooper it'll be cheaper, but I found if you wanted to buy a bog standard 80's mini auto on 12" wheels, then they were more expensive than the manual equivalent. And as for the late 1275 auto's. Too much!
