Hi guys,

Just a quick question. I'm currently stripping my metro turbo engine so i can rebuild it to my own specification. I just wanted to know what is best to use to clean and get rid of grease etc on the on block external components? and oil and other contaminents on the internals?

What do you use? and what is best to avoid?

Cheers,

Guennie

I find that paraffin cleans things up quickly and easily.

If youre having any machine work done on the block get them to hot dip it to clean it, then paint it, then use diesel to clean the oilways etc then blow it out with a compressor

I've been using brush on 'GUNK' I like it because unlike diesel or parrafin you can wash it off with water and not worry about spilling it over the street. Smells nice to.

Traffic film remover in a squirty bottle or similar. Scrub with a stiff brush and pressure wash (hot preferably) off.

Gunk and Jizer are very good but you dont really want to get water in the block when washing it off

So long as the water isn't under pressure, then you should be okay.

Try to protect the electrics with plastic bags or whatever first.

I always get a comfortable seat, a container, selection of old toothbrushes and a spray bottle.

Dip the brush in container of turps or kero (or something similar) and brush scrub away - spray clean kero/turps onto same area to clean away the muck.

Quite wasteful of cleaners but I placed a large drip tray underneath and reused it a couple of times.

i did mine the other day using tool cleaner, its a spray version (not foam) has lots of alcohol in it so it evaporates itself in seconds and gets up everything with just a toothbrush for what? a quid or so? and because its a grease cleaner too you can paint straight on the top of it

best answer? me thinks :-
