Hi all
Just a quick question. Im in love with range rovers (yes im sad) and would absolutley love to have one when i turn 17 (already got the mini sorted :- ) Thing is as usual the insurance, but a while ago i was looking at some quotes and for my brother who was 17 at the time to be insured on a 1.4 MG ZR (group 9) the cheapeest quote i got on money supermarket for fully comp was 3.5k . Then out of interest i did it for a P38 range rover, 3rd party fire and theft and it was around 3.2k cheapest at 17 :| this got me thinking and then i did it with a hse 4.6 v8 p38 and it was 3.5k cheapest for 3rd party. Now my brother got reasonable insurance on his car (600 a year) but when he came back from uni it was exspensive to insure him on both his car and our land rover defender (2006 2.5tdi) and it was 36 a week for the landy. Does anyone know of anyone that is insured on one or any other high insurance car at 17?? Also my dad has an old 320ce merc coupe which i love driving but i think it was around group 20 or 18.
Sorry for the life story just a very curious and nosy person.

Cheers

Have you considered fuel costs as well as the cost of mantaining one? Speaking from experience they do like to drink fuel and also factor in the cost of mantaining one. With the general age of P38s now, it is likely that most are coming to a point in their lives where they need their air suspension overhauling which can be costly. However they are nice and enjoyable when they are working right :-

yeh ive looked into most things and would probably change it to coils if i could afford it. Also i would only get a v8 if it had the lpg on it.

even on gas, running costs will make you weep. Single-figure mpg round town is not unusual for these things. Air suspension...electrical systems....there is a hell of a lot to go wrong, and they are NOT renowned for electrical reliability. Even just putting 4 decent tyres on it wont leave you any change from a grand, possibly significantly more!

As for the insurance question - little point in asking here, unless there is another forum user the same age as you who lives in the same house as you. You will have to contact insurers for yourself. Quotes vary enormously from person to person.
As a 17 year old - NOTHING is going to be cheap to insure. You just have to build things up slowly.

Exactly, you have to walk before you can run. You can't realistically start your driving life driving the car of your dreams.

Unless of course that car is a mini :(

hey, my dad has recently put me on the insurance for both the p38 (4 ltr v8) and the mgf (1.8i) and im 18

the compined cost is 4k...

which, yes i admit is a lot of money, but they are both realy good fun to drive...

i am insured with adrian flux...

they gave me the cheapest quote and the most "perks"... 90 days EU driving, breakdown cover ect ect..

so, back to your question, yes you can drive a p38 at a young age...
you just need the money to do it...

just by advised, they drink fuel like its going out of fashion, even with an LPG conversion... but if your carefull, it is possible to get 25 mpg on a run...

so make sure your right foot isnt constantly on the floor

hope its helped...

if your dead set on paying ut that much money on insurance then get the 4.0 instead of the 4.6, the power difference really isn't noticeable, they do slightly better milage but the main thing is the engines are a lot more reliable and run better on lpg than the 4.6. I used to have a range rover classic vogue se with a 3.5 v8 and I worked out I was getting 4 mpg average on the road and not even 1 mpg off road

Yep the 4.6 has engine issues where the cylinder liners move!!

I found insurance on a 2.0 TD discovery cheaper than on my 1.3 polo

Very low risk car as very few new drivers would ever want one.
