Hello Folks,
The rear speakers in my wifes' Mini (X-plate 2000) started making an awful sound a few weeks ago when she started the car - the radio was not even on! Now, there is a 'pop' when the car is switched on from the right speaker followed by hissing, and nothing from the other. The battery has started to flatten - seemingly for no reason also.
On Friday when I opened the boot to investigate the flat battery, I noticed the hissing sound coming from the right speaker, even though the keys weren't in the ignition. So far I have checked:
  • voltage on the speaker feeds when the car is not turned on - 0.012v
  • voltage when the radio is on - LH speaker no change, RH speaker 2.89V
  • impedence of each speaker - both 4 ohms
  • continuity of the speaker cables unplugged - open circuit

I am beginning to suspect the CD player - it's the original unit.

Any other ideas?

Best regards,
RoyM

OK - I bought a new battery from Halfords as it seems that the old one is losing charge, so that's one problem (hopefully) fixed.

At the same time I asked them to try the stereo in their disply unit. The result: very little sound from the left channel and very distorted sound from the right one. Would like to repair this unit as it's original, so are there any tips or recommendations for what I should do or where it could be repaired?

Best regards,

RoyM

I concur, if the display one was ok in the car then your CD player has grown old and weary.

I have a kenwood CD player doing nothing in the spare room if you want some cheerful as a replacement!

Thanks for the offer but I fixed the unit today! It seems that some rain had got inside and some of the soldered connections on the PCB were a little fouled. A few minutes with a toothbrush to clean this up and it's good as new.

Best regards,

RoyM
