I have an 87 city 998, recently ran out of fuel and the car now sometimes jumps and flutters a little when I put my foot right down on the accelerator, has this got something to do with letting her run right out of fuel or another thought i had was am i using the right fuel, unleaded? Any help with this would be much appreciated as its bloody annoying.

could it have sucked crap into the carb when it was low on fuel

I agree with the above and as you own a pre-1989 Mini, then you should really be using a lead replacement additive.
