It's a boss for screwing a Lambda sensor into. That's one of the sensors for an injection system.

Who said it was? That's probably why there isn't a sensor screwed into the boss, don't you think?

Was nothing screwed into it at all? Your Mini being a carb model with a cat is supposed to have a gas sampling pipe. That is a pipe that runs from the exhaust to a more convenient point in the engine bay in order to test the un-catalysed exhaust gas, without that there's no easy way to tune the car properly into a condition that will avoid damaging the cat. Is this sampling pipe fitted in your car? Is the manifold original? I think the pipe is normally screwed into the downpipe just ahead of the cat, is that where this exhaust section came from?

I believe that you will have to use a standard manifold and down pipe as far as the cat in this car because aftermarket manifolds interefere with the kickdown system in an auto. I think some members have worked out how to adjust the kickdown around the manifold if you want to do that. What parts are standard now and what are not?

its all standard

yes there was a screw in bolt thing and this was connected to a metal pipe that ran to the engine bay not connected to anything.

the pics shows the down pipe from the manifold then connects to the cat

so can i just buy a standard downpipe without the bolt hole

No, the pipe you found that wasn't connected to anything is the sampling pipe and is important in a car using a cat and a carb. I believe there should be a bung or a cap to plug the end of the sampling pipe. It's a specific downpipe for Minis of this age, not unique to the auto. I'm pretty sure it's exaclty the same boss as the lambda sensor uses but I'm not certain. If it is then you could use an injection type manifold with the sensor boss, if not then you'll have to use the right downpipe.

I've just looked through some part numbers for this and it seems the auto version of the downpipe is different from the manual version. Probably for the same reason I mentioned above regarding aftermarket manifolds. That is if I've looked up the right one but during this period, with the change from carb to injection with different models having standard cats or optional cats and there being so many limited production special models made there's a lot of different exhausts. If I'm right you're after GEX12054 but check that with the suppliers to see if it ties up with what you need. Mini Spares don't seem to have one of this type, I'd try Somerford first.
