what about.....
Painting bonnett same colour as car - black looks good on minis :shifty:

Go for mk1 grille, but perhaps try alternate b&w slats?
The checker pattern could look pretty good, although you could do something like that near the bottom of the door between the two wheel arches and fade it out towards the back of the car, to create the idea that it's quick.
Looks like you could also be going for a sort of rally themed car with the adhesive bonnett reg plate so perhaps some mudflaps would look good (also with chequer pattern)

just some ideas, hope this helps

i like it as it is in the first pic!!

just needs some black 10" wheels and lowering!!!

Cheers guys, in the summer I think I'm going to re do the matt black, debumpered with numberplate on bonnet.
