Is it Possible to convert the Horizontal Cartridge Type Oil Filter housing on an Automatic to accept a Spin On Oil Filter?

I know many have converted the pre 73 Manual Transmission cars to accept the more Commonplace Spin On Filter but has anybody ever done this to an Automatic and does it work ok ??

Auto Oil filters arnt as easy to get hold of and there a bit of a pain to fit im just looking at the possibility of Converting to Spin On to make Oil Changes Easier

Ive been Reading up on it a bit and it appears that the first autos 61-65 were the same as Manual Oil Filter housings just mounted Horizontally as Opposed to Vertically but from 65 onwards they included a "Pressure Valve" which the Manual didnt seem to have?

Ive also noticed that Metro Automatics have Spin on Filters so maybe i can convert to a Metro filter housing?

Only thing is how much longer will Metro Auto Filters Remain Available?
What id really like is to find a way to use standard Manual Spec Spin On Oil Filters :o

The Manual filters are fatter and shorter but the Auto ones longer but narrower does this mean they are the same volume size in essence?

Any Help and Advice would be Welcome i just want to make oil changes easier :)

Nope, all auto's use the same paper filter element...even metro's, never seen a spin on, on an auto and can't find any reference to a mount for a spin on in the parts manual to claim there is...

The filter surface for the auto, is MASSIVE compared to that of the spin on, basically because of the volume of oil which goes through it, the auto oil pump, must be twice the size of the manual.

p/n GFE104, suspect it'll be around for a while yet !

Volume of a filter is irrelevant, it's the filter surface area that matters. As GW says the filter area in the auto is immense.
