Hi,

I'm going to pickup a Peugeot 206 GTI (138BHP model) on Saturday but as I have not actually spent any money yet I thought I would ask on here whether there is anything particular that I should look out for?

The car will be for my girlfriend but I will also drive it occasionally. The particular car I'm buying is a 2000 W-Reg GTI that has done 65K, I drove it last night and it all seemed good to me. I plan to take a longer look around it on Sat before parting with my cash.

Any tips appreciated..

Thanks,

Luke.

I own a 2004 model, so the last one produced before the 180 dition.

Look out for sloppy gear changes and whiny gearboxes - not that it is a run-away type thing as ours whines but id pefectly ok.

Make sure it has been serviced well and that the cambelt has been changed, dont pay attetnion to any spiel about 80k or 100k intervals - it would be a costly error.

Other than that go with your gut instinct. I bought mine after a 10 min drive. Only downside is they can be a bit fuel hungry if you do short runs.

Any questions give me a shout ;)

dont put poor tyres on it as they can be a bit of a nightmare if not on decent rubber

My Bro has one.

Theres somthing in the passenger footwell, and if you touch it with your foot, it makes the brakes stay on! it took a few weeks for us too notice, we noticed when my dad followed us to the pub once, just pushed the little thing in and they went off again :D

Thanks for the pointers I'll look out for the gearbox prob.

I must admit that it drove really well and was much quicker than I was expecting.

Cheers,

Luke.

There not to bad, some of the early w, late v plate suffer with clutch judder, and theres a big black cover over the engine which is held on by little plastic clips, these wear and the cover shakes which then sends the knock sensor mental in the head, makes the car run rough, took ages to discover this was a problem on my sisters 206 gt, and since my local garage has seen lods with the same fault, If the cover is left off all shall be fine. Always buy a 206 that has got genuine front wings, you can see the little pug badges stamped on them on the bit that the bonnet closures over, where the wing bolts are. Avoid it if it has been repaired, as 206s are made of cheese, and we seen to have to gig all the ones weve ever had in, after the smallets of taps, Apart from that the misses will love it, I test drove a gti 180 a few years ago, and Went out and bought a 306 Gti 6 Instead, which ive now had for 3 years and reliable put 50 000 on with no probs at all, Check it over drive it and see, Good luck and hope its a good car..

Thanks for this I'll check out those items you've mentioned.

I've had Peugeot's before got a 106 at the moment that we're replacing with this 206 GTI and I've had a 306 D Turbo. There fairly good cars apart from them being French but I'll have to live with that.

Cheers

That would be the brake light switch :D, try not to kick it again.

And I have to strongly disagree with the "don't buy it if it hasn't got genuine front wings" comment. My uncle has repaired many 206's with pattern wings as in the trade they now fo a front end rebuild kit consisting of all the panels, lights and bumper.

Sorry if it sounds stroppy and off-topic but I get really annoyed at those type of comments which are based on hear-say and rumour.

Obviously look for evidence of a bad repair, but to be honest how many cars are on the roads that haven't been repaired in some way, and i guarantee most bodyshops don't use genuine panels on every car.

Back on topic,

They also suffer with anti-roll bar links but aren't expensive. Other than that they are a great handling car (not as good as a 106 GTi but still very good) and are fab crusiers on the motorway.
Can't comment on the earlier version as I said before ours is an 04 plate and ctually has the 180 engine but not the manifold and ecu (only found this out when changing the timing belt and found it had VVT not adjustable vernier, and no woodruff key in the crank to lock the timing up (itis done bia the flywheel)!

Oh and the insurance can be painful as well, depending on age etc but think it is group 15/16.

Thanks also for the advice. I'll be giving it a good check over and hopefully it will all be good.

Insurance isn't an issue, got 5 years no claims and we're both 25 so will only be about 300ish. although having 3 cars and a motorbike it all adds up!!!

Luke.
