Hi all,

I am currently pondering over the idea of using a duplex timing chain on my, to be, overbore 1275 MG engine. The engine currently has a single timing chain which seems to be in good order & could be used again.

Is it worth replacing the current timing gear with a duplex chain? I understand the benefits of a more accurately timed cam and quieter engine noise. However, I have noticed a few different types of duplex chain. Some Lightened and others not etc - is it more of a marketing scam than actual genuine benefits?

The Engine will be 1293 / 1310 / 1330 depending on the bore condition, and will be used daily with an MG special cam

The prices range from circa £15 to £130

( I have used the minisport website for ease of comparison)

Duplex Timing Gear & Chain Set £19.81 inc VAT

Lightened Duplex Timing Gear & Chain Set £27.06 inc VAT

Then there is a huge step up in price;

Lightened Vernier Duplex Timing Gear & Chain Set £79.96 inc VAT

Piper Duplex Vernier £133.43 inc VAT

I intend on spending my money optomising what I currently have.
* Which is my money best spent for the gains?
* What are the benefits of a lightened timing chain?
* What has everybody else used?

I don't know about the lightened bit, but you are looking at two different products looking at Duplex kits & Vernier Duplex kits. To get the cam timing correct with a Duplex kit you will also need offset keys to get 'best fit', whereas the Vernier are built in & you can get exact, hence the greater price.

Ahh, thats where I was going wrong! Does it work out cheaper to use the Duplex kit with an offset key for the same benefits as vernier?

With Vernier you should be able to get "perfect" cam timing. I think the best you could hope for with offset keys is within 1-2 degrees which shoud be fine for a road car. I think Verniers are more suited to race engines/people looking to squeeze every drop of bhp out of their engine.

Yeah the 1 or 2 degree's isn't a huge loss on a road car, it might make the diference between 1 or 2bhp on a race engine, thanks for the info guys. Think I'll spend about £30 on a duplex and then get the offset keys to time it within a few deg's.

Id say get the Swifty one

Easy to use, lightweight and fairly cheap

A Vernier pulley adjusts in steps too. That Swifty one is sexy, but you could put the price difference to good use elsewhere.

You can get off set keys in 1 degree increments so they can't be that inaccurate can they?

For a road car, just get the £19 one. There's no point spending the extra tenner on something that will do exactly the same job. You won't notice it being any lighter on a road car. As already said, spend the money elsewhere
