Hi guys,

Ive nearly stripped my gearbox down. But im having a game getting the pinion nut off!

How tight are they, im scared of breaking something in the box the amount of force im putting on it. Ive got the box under the ramp and a breaker bar on it and im jumping up and down puting my weight on it and the fffliping thing wont budge! Does it harm the box in any way, I got 1st and 3rd engadged.

Paul.

It's 'should' only be done upto 150lbft, but needless to say I've had some which had been right 'do-dahs' to get off...

I've actually broken two breaker bars since building boxes...

Best way I've found is, as you probably have done, find something substantially heavy to lock the box under, and then slowly apply the force on the nut until it gives. Quite simply if it does snap the 3rd motion shaft then it was on far too tight and has probably caused a stress in the shaft anyway.

One thing you should avoid using is an air impact wrench, but sometimes there is no alternative, make sure you check the gears after doing this tho', and I'd be tempted to bin the shaft and nut.

Well theres a gear rattle on 1st,2nd &3rd but not in 4th would you say it might have something to do with it?

Can the box take the strain?

Paul.

4th just plugs the shafts together whereas the others use the layshaft, sounds like a bearing .

It's not the pinion nut which will snap, more likely to be the bar, socket or shaft...

A really solid bar helps. I have a monster spanner that's often more effective because it doesn't flex at all. A clout with a big hammer or a jack under the free end makes up for the lack of leverage. I took mine to a friendly garage for some impact driver action.

I was looking for a picture of my friend Todd Miller removing the nut from one of his Austin America gearboxes. Sorry, couldn't find the picture so a description will have to suffice. Todd puts a sheet of cardboard on the ground and puts the gearbox upside down on it. He then jacks up the biggest vehicle he has (in his case a Ford truck). With the truck way off the ground he slides the cardboard/gearbox under the truck's front wheel then slowly lowers the truck to pin the box to the ground. Then comes a very large breaker bar with a pipe on it. The picture shows my friend slowly stepping on the pipe to break the nut free.

Avoid the impact wrench if possible, go for the long breaker bar and a slow, steady increase of force on the end of it.

Let us know what you finally do to get the nut off.

Will do lawson thanks :D.

Been thinking about it and thought about putting a breaker bar on it, getting it as low as I can, then jacking the bar up?

Paul.

Downward force is better than upward, it's a lot harder to move the earth than it is whatever is holding it down...
