Earlier on, as I was driving home at about 10pm, the stereo suddenly turned off then back on. I thought little of this and carried on, as it came back on immediatly. About 1/4 mile later it happens again, and this time the lights went off too, as did the ignition. I pulled over and as I stopped, smoke came out of the engine bay. As I opened the bonnet, fire breaks out, from around the side of the manifolds, and a wire is hanging loose, glowing red hot. I run to the boot and kill the battery, and then back to the engine to extinguish the fire. Thankfully, the fire was caused by the melted plastic covering the wire and did not get near the carb or fuel line. The problems didn't end here though, the wire in question was a power feed to a stereo, installed by myself, which had come loose and dropped onto the manifold, this shorting the electrics, cooking the wire so hot that it melted through, (it was thick stuff too, gauge 4 I think) and had also put a hole in the braided oil pressure line that I have also run through the bulkhead. I only found this out once I had removed the traces of stereo wire and checked engine after starting her up before moving off! Without any tools apart from pliers and molegrips, I had to clamp the oil line with the grips, after trying for a while to remove oil line and put in the ordinary sensor. It was impossible to remove the oil sensor with the tools I had, so this method was the only option. Thankfully I was able to gently drive the remaining mile or so home without further ado.
So my point is.....
I, like others too, am trying to work on my mini on a very tight budget, and as a result of this had skimped on cable ties, thinking the wire would stay put, which they generally do! But being on your own, in the middle of knowhere, with your car on fire is not nice. I know I should have used proper ties and all that so don't want lecturing, this post is mearly to highlight something that happened to me as a warning for other people, young or old, as I know I would have been devastated to have had to ring my dad to ask him to collect me, standing next to the smouldering shell of my burnt out mini. I was scared that might have happened but fortunatly I caught things just in time.
So guys and girls:
CABLES AND WIRES NEED TIDYING AWAY!
Learn from my stupidity.

Ps. Mods:sorry if this is in the wrong section but it's sort of technical....:D

Insulin tape... I thought insulin was what diabetics injected with?

Do you mean insulating tape? (highlighting to stop you getting laughed out of an electrical shop or something :D )

We've all done bit's like this slip of the tougue and all that.. My mums on SOCIAL ME on facebook and I accidently asked if she was on FACEIAL ME (not sure about the spelling) earlier :genius:

Diazipan isn't that a prescribed drug (Oh dear I may be doing the same as you earlier here :- )?

By the way I once put black hole into google in a physics lesson back when I was at school and got some suprising results

You should also think about buying some fuses, and some little fuse holders. Any wiring you add should be fused down to protect the cable in question. The fact that yours was glowing red hot suggests you have taken a feed from an unfused supply, and when it shorted out, it tried to draw a massive amount of current from the battery. This will ignite wires in seconds.... Not a good idea....!!

I had an uncle who told me he'd had a nice large conservative built on the back of his house. Same guy also said his local vicar was into keeping erotic birds (parrots etc.) :D

by the way, insulation tape has a habit of unwinding in the heat of an engine bay, cable ties are better for securing wiring.

Fuses are the only way forward.
BUT: I read (and replied to, in annoyance) a few tips on another forum about fitting CBs.
The conversation was along the lines of "Get a cable run from the battery." "But my fuse keep blowing", "Well, cut that out and it should all work."
I politely explained that the fuse was doing it's job....

On the subject of which, why when a fuse blows is it termed as 'failing'.

Surely it's 'suceeding' as it's doing exactly what it's designed to do? As in the often used phrase:

"A bulb failed in my house and suceeded a fuse on the circuit board"

had the same kind of thing with me got a phone call asking if i could re wire a mini that had been on the front cover of mini world was purple with a turbo as well. i said bring it down to the garage and i will give u a quote. so he did he wanted a custom dash wired up and the car re wired so he left it there and said ring when its done.
i took the car out for a drive to see what it went like before i started work and suddenly smoke from the dash area i pulled over took the bonnet off and the wires that went through the bulkhead had no gromit around the wire and it shorted the wires going to the dash.was very lucky i just pulled all the wires out of the dash and pushed it back.

so the lesson is use cable ties to hold wire
use gromits when putting wires in the bulkhead
use the correct sixe wire for the job it is needed for
and use tape to tape the wires together as air cannot get to the fire as quick and will not spred as quick

my mini spontaniously combusted whilst driving down the road! smoke came through the front airvents so i pulled over and opened the bonnet. Found nothing so closed the bonnet to discover the entire of the inside was on fire! After i stripped the car down to scrap, i found that the wires around the interior light were completely bare, so i think they were shorting and smoke came down the inside of the front pillar and out through the air vent and when i opened the door to get out it caused a surge due to the interior light coming on and set the headliner on fire which dropped and burnt everything.
