Hi guys,
Got my gearbox stripped down finally, but cant see any failures jumping out at me. 1st motion & 3rd motion bearings fell notchy so will replace them, but cant find anything big wrong which I thought there might be considering the noise the box was making in the car. Really load gear rattle in 1st, 2nd & 3rd but not in 4th.
Any ideas guys?
Paul.

That'll undoubtedly be a worn layshaft, and surface breakup up the needle rollers

Hmmm. Looking at the layshaft you can see its been used but theres no signs of piting, you can see where the bearings have been turning on it. Would of replaced it anyway to eliminate any problems. Also the lay gears seem to have a tight spot on them, when getting the small thrust washer back in, its near enough impossible without putting the thrust washer in first, then the laygears, could that be a problem aswell?
Also doesn't minispares do the rebuild kits anymore?
Thanks guessworks

I believe Minispares have the same predicament that I do at the moment, a certain lack of layshafts.
When putting a box back together, put the thrusts in first ( use a little grease to hold them in place on the case - oops trick of the trade there
) and then drop the laygear in rolling it round the gears.
Have a look at the rebuild guide in the faq's
