Right earlier on this evening my car decided to cut itself out and when I tried to restart the car I turned the key in the ignition and my insturment pod comes on and resets itself as normal and the red ignition light comes on, but when I try to turn the key nothing happened, it wouldnt turn over and no clicking or whirring of the starter motor.
So I turned off the ignition and tried again, this time nothing at all came on, no clock, no ignition light so I suspected that the ignition barrel was at fault.
Ive swapped this for a known working one and the car fired up right away, but as soon as I tried to put my wipers on or use my indicators the car cuts out and the ignition light and clock goes off.

I couldnt get the car running again so I was kindly towed home. Once home I turned the ignition on once again, again the clock didnt come on but the ignition light came on very faintly and was flickering slightly but wont turn over.

Ive kinda drew a conclusion that there must be a drain or a dead short in the electrical system but im stumped as to where to even begin to look.

The wiring loom in the car was brand new at the time of being built in August last year, as are the stalks and all the switches.

Any ideas as to what could be casuing the problem and where to begin looking?

Check the ignition relay terminals and connections, usually found on or around the bulkhead at the drivers side. Silver on older minis and yellow on the later models.

Could be main battery cable, mine did that, shorted on exhaust.

The battery cable runs all the way through the inside of the car rally style so no no chance of that catching on the exhaust.
Ive been out too it tonight and it fired up first turn of the key, turned everything on and she kept on running nicely :S
Its true Mini's seem to fix themselves......

what you do to annoy the mini as wasnt happy to have done that to you

Right im in desperate need of some help guys, I came to the car again this morning and turned the ignition on and absolutly nothing happened.
The earth strap in the boot is brand new, as is the engine strap and loom earth.
Ive checked the reading in the battery and im getting 12.6v, I can go to the front and I get the exact same reading on the pre-engaged starter motor.
I did have a slightly corroded brown wire going to the starter motor, this has been repaired, yet im still having the same problem.

Ive checked the ignition barrel wires, and on the brown wire when the ignition im getting a reading of 2v.

The ignition light isnt coming on at all when the key is turned.

Is there anything else which I should check?Ive changed relays and checked all the fuses and connections to the fuse box but I cant find anything at fault.

this happened to me, I went to the fuse box, took each clip off one at a time, cleaned the connection and put it back.
that did it
