Hey

Recently my head gasket went and it went to a garage for a quote. They were going to charge me loads so i decided to do it myself.
Ive had the head skimmed and the gasket set is in the post.

While reading the haynes on and watching vids i have realised that the push rods have to be put back in the way they were takien out.
This is a problem as the garage chucked it all in a box and i have no clue what to do

Please help

i think it just means you will have to be more careful when re-settign the tappit clearances.

to be honest i never bother labelling them

The longer ones are for rocker cover holes , and (if there are more) then they might be for mounting alternator on.
How many long ones have you got ?

I didn't think there were any bolts involved in changing a head gasket?

Though, the three small called be the thermostat cover,

Head should be on 9 studs, and then rocker should go on the rear 5 head studs, and 5 shorter studs a bit further forward.

By large and small do you mean diameter or length, and can you guesstimate each.

Sorry i mean studs.

There are 4 studs left in the head atm which i guess are which te rockers go onto.

Also i have 4 large studs and 3 smaller 1s

As in size i mean length

How many studs left in the block?

Should have 9 total, so guess there's two still in the block? Looking at the engine block from the front of the car.

All 5 front studs should be 'short' ones (only go through the head.
All 4 rear studs should be 'long' ones (as they go through the rocker stanchions too).

If you have 1 extra 'long' stud then I put it on the Left hand front, and bolt down the head as usual, this leaves about 2cm of stud stuck out, just enough for the coil bracket and another nut to fit on.

I can probably describe better if you draw up what you've got...

Ah brilliant photo's,

Numbering the bolts and studs from 1 on the left to 12 on the right.

1, 2, 3 - Thermostat housing bolts, (usually studs and nuts, though Metro's came with there bolts) - ensure you lightly grease the end before fitting.

4, 5 - These are short head studs with the nuts still on, remove the nuts if you can and they'll be the same as 10, 11, 12 (note below)

6, 7, 8, 9 - Long head studs these go in the rear set of threads in the block and through the four holes in the rear of the block (nearest in the photo on the left) and rockers.

10, 11, 12 (and 4/5) - Short head studs go int he holes on the front of the head and block, (next to the spark plugs).

Note: If you can get the nuts off 4+5 put in with 10, 11, 12, if not then put 10, 11, 12 in the middle three front holes on the block and then 4/5 in the outside two once the heads on, but before you torque it down.

Follow procedure in Haynes for torquing the head down, do all finger tight to start with, then increase torque in steps, until you're at the specified torque on all bolts.
When torquing bolts at each torque setting start in the middle and work outward

...6....2....3....7...
8 o 4 o 1 o 5 o 9

(Where o denotes a spark plug).

That all make sense?

Because you are not putting pushrods back with the same came follower and rocker arm I would just make sure to adjust valve clearances after first 500 miles or so. You might just find that they go out of adjustment even quicker than normal (!). Should be just fine once everything settles down again .

Clean up the studs with a wire brush and wind the studs 'n nuts to full thread depth to make sure there's no resistance before you refit the head. also replace or really grease up, the thermostat bolts - they have a habit of corroding to the alloy castings.
