Mini Cooper (carb)
1991

I have a 1991 Mini Cooper (carb model). The problem is that there is lots of judder and vibration from the front wheels when braking at high speed. I'm not sure if the vibration is at only one wheel or both. I have checked the suspension and all is ok. I changed the pads and the judder went away but returned after a 1000 miles. I changed the discs and pads again but the problem is still there. I tried normal mintex pads which were much better than the green stuff pads.

I am very grateful for any help and tips.

Thanks to all in advance.

Rob

check that the hub bolt is tightened up to about 120nm. your tracking could be out or the wheels are out of balance.

things to check

1) discs are tight on the drive flanges
2) the drive flanges are clean and square on the mounting face to wheel bearings, and disc face
3) the brake calipers where pads fit is corroded or worn

i doubt it but you could have warped disks which could be causing it

I had this same problem in a clio when I changed the discs and pads a couple of times but still came back. It's going to have to be a process of elimination and start by getting the wheel alignment sorted and front wheeels balanced - sounds like it could be this has you only have the judder at high speed.

my car was juddering, turned out to be warped discs... fitted new discs, twice (!), but they just keep warping.... any ideas? Think it could be something in the caliper(s).

could be wheel bearing or the wheel balancing both cause warping and judder

if new discs and pads were fitted then the juddering came back after a while to me it points to a binding brake caliper causing the pads not being able to return and keeping pressure on the friction face of the disc and pad causing the disc to heat up thus causing another warped disc

thanks very much, that sound about right. what can I do to fix it? do I need a whole new caliper(s)? Or are they refurb-able etc?

Cheers

=] this is so true because where alot of people go wrong fitting new pads is that they dont clean the pistons first before pushing all the rust and grime into the seal coarsing the caliper the stick, so i would defo start by checking your calipers
