ahh, got an interview for the army next week

what do they want to hear?

I want to do engineering, combat and logistics

is it actually possible to do all of them?

whats the life style actually like?
ano it looks good in the army dvd but they only show the good bits
whats the bad bits?

how often can you go home?

not a good comment really,especially for people like me who have returned from afghanistan and had friends injured and/or killed!!
if your asking questions like this then you are clearly not ready for service life,you need to do more research on your chosen trade,and life in the army in general,before you commit.

I am a RAF wife. The answer to your question the life can sometimes be good - regular pay etc, but along with that can also be absolute c***. Knowing your other half is away somewhere you would rather they weren't with not alot of contact is really hard.
I know this is a different perspective to the one you wanted but you also need to think very carefully about this career as is can also affect your family not just yourself.

Anyway, sorry to sound negative but if you have given this LOTS of thought and consideration and you still want the Army life go for it.

How old are you?

There's not much point in BS'ing them, they'll have plenty of chance to suss you out once you're in training. An interview is a two way process so be honest and be more bothered about what you need to know from them. As it happens, someone who's got the wherewithal to think seriously about what their future and the implications is also what they'd like to see.

i have a couple of friends in the army, one who is in training at the moment which he loves, gives you discipline, excercise and a skill.
The other has just returned from helmand province and had seen things which no man/woman should ever see!! safe to say hes not going back! but like above, you have to REALLY be sure its what you want to do and if it is as long as you put the time and effort in, i cant see why you cant do it. good luck to you.

Adult entry: You'll need to be reasonably sure it's for you before you sign on the dotted, though you still have some opportunity to change your mind during training. Consider the TA if you really can't make your mind up.

ive had mates who were and are in the army toms in Iraq now and kev was in afganistan

my other mat dan did basic training got lots of beastings then decided wasnt for him

it changes you to the core but if you feel you can go 2 days sat in a ditch with nothing but the sound of gun shots flying over head, constant air strikes and the rest of you friends dying style situation then go for it

i know myself i could take it but would hate gettting told what to do during training so id probs get bollockign every day plus im not little so big guys tend to get it in the ear more

just give it a go mate, army life is like marmite you either love it or you hate it. if you dont like it you can leave before your training is finished.
Its the best thing that i have done with my life, you see some messed up stuff when your on tour but the bond you get with your pals when your relying on each other to keep each other alive is unreal and is like a second family.
To be brutally honest ive jumped out of planes and rapelled down sheer cliff faces but the biggest addrenaline rush ive ever had is that of an AK47 round as it cracks past you. Scary? hell yes but im lovin my life and goin on tour has made me value life more than ever before.

to answer your job choice questions, if you join the royal engineers, you will be a "Combat engineer" and if you trade as a driver in the Engineers you will also have the logistics side of life. just look on the armys website.

Have you thought about the other 2 services. I'm in the RAF. The jop I do ( Aircraft Tech) is good but overall demanding. I recently got back from Afghanistan at the beginning of December and i'm going away again on monday. I only do 2 months away at a time where as the Army will do about 7.

The Army can be known to treat you like a baby sometimes and the rank stucture is very strict. My job however I can walk up to my Sergeant/ Chief and speak to them on a first name basis. Do this in the Army and your likely to get slapped.

The lifestyle is good but its not for everyone. Do your reasearch (on all 3 services) and don't be affraid to go see them all at the different AFCO desks. Its best to get the choice right before you join. I nearly Joined the REME but in the end went for the Airforce. Can't remember why I did but I haven't looked back. Done 7 years this July and got 5 more to do and looking to extend even furthur.


Good look with it all. Oh and be warned. The hair will go.

You have misconseptions on the army mate im not treated like a baby and i can call my sergeants by there first names, the army has to be more focused as we work under extreme presures so voices get raised to get the job done sometimes. Not being rude mate but please dont comment on army life if you haven't done it. It would be like me sayin that RAF are civvies in uniform but i dont know any better.
