I'm just wondering if the 998cc engine is a good engine to tune for road use. how much is it possible to tune without putting to much strain on the engine parts while driving it.

Hi there.

1. Read the front site page about stage one kits.
2. Read through the FAQ section for general information about tuning - might even find some how-to guides.
3. Search the site, It's why it's here and there's tonnes of information about tuning. This has been asked loads and is such a broad question with many answers!

In short, the A-series is a VERY tuneable engine,.. though it can get very expensive if you want Big power.

I'd recommend getting a good quality stage 1 kit (from minispares or Somerford minis etc) and then having it set-up on a mini friendly Rolling Road. You will notice a very large difference in the car after this and it is generally the first thing to do when looking at modifying without changing major components such as the head etc....

Pretty much any part can be replaced by a performance part. Pistons, Cams, exhasuts, heads, gearboxes, carb, fuel injection,... everything.

A standard bottom end can take much more than a standard spec engine can throw at it
