Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):
When I turn the ignition, although the engine will turn over nice and quickly, often it just won't start (it doesn't sound like it's firing). Sometimes it'll work (after a while it'll start to fire, build up then run fine) other times I'll go through a whole battery charge trying to start it with no luck. After it's started and the engine's warm, it'll always start again quickly at the first turn of the key. I think the problem lies with the coil - having the problem described above last night, I noticed that there were yellow sparks jumping about at the end of the coil when I turned the ignition - obviously this isn't good, and I'm guessing it's the cause of the non-starting problem.
So is it just a simple case of a new coil to solve everything?
Any non-standard parts that might be involved with the problem? Nope

possibly but with it only happening from cold could be there a leak either due to piston rings or head gasket as the heat will take up the gap as the piston expands or as said could be coil
if you get new coil and the problem stays then do a compression test and then a spark test this will rule out major problems other thing could be that the carbs getting iced jets due to the cold weather only some diagnostic will tell if you were near could try my coil see if it fixes it

if it runs fine when you get it going it wouldnt be the head gasket.
can you tell if there is power at the plugs?

Problem solved!
While fiddling yesterday, the end of the coil-> distributor lead snapped off in the coil - it must have been that, and not the coil, which was causing the problem. The local garage gave me an old spare: now the engine starts near instantly at the first turn of the key (and runs a lot faster too!). New set of leads on the way means the problem should be fully solved for a while to come.
