Hello - I have just brought a mini! there is stereo connections, but when i plug it in there is no power. Halfords were very helpful and tested the head unit and the wiring. They seemed to think that the earth was dodgy. How do I fit a new one, bearing in mind I have little knowledge of minis! (pics would be really useful)

Thanks

The easiest way is to attach a piece of wire from any part of clean metal on the car, and attach the other end to the chassis of the radio (anywhere on the metal casing)

The aerial is attatched to the left wing (metal) so does that mean it is earthed properly?

I would think so, all aerials have to be earthed to work properly so as long as it was fitted right then you should be ok

The aerial is attatched to the left wing (metal) so does that mean it is earthed properly?

As far as i know the outer of the ariel plug (the bit that compresses slightly when inserted into the HU) is the earth, and the live is the centre pin, like and RCA audio connection.

Then everything should earth through a black wire coming out the HU...

Depends if the nut securing the aerial has bitten through the paint work enough to make a good connection.

to be honest a proper earth connection should be made as close to the unit as possible and if there is a earth wire then I am always inclined to use it as there is no guarantee that the main circuit board makes direct earth connection to the chassis.

Though the option is there to somehow secure the earth lead to the chassis so it feeds off the aerials.

id always connect the earth the wire from the iso connector just put a screw in the shelf under the dash and then crimp a ring connector to a wire and then chrimp that to the black wire job done
