How essential is an engine stand when building/swapping/setting up an engine?

I'll be swapping my block and head in my 998 and just wondered if it is a part I could do without.

Would one like this Sealey Engine Stand be ok?

I never bother with one for mini engines.

Sort the engine on the bench (I actually use a work horse thing as it gives you a little more access) and then with the gearbox on the floor, just drop the engine on to it.

Or fit the box to the engine as it weighs less.

build up bottom end - fit box - flip over and complete.

Only thing I was thinking is that I'll be timing the cam etc so will need to turn the engine over with the flywheel. Is this possible on a work bench?

If you've got the money to spend by all means get one. Honestly ive never used one and do not have the space.

place the block onto the gearbox to do the timing.

Thing is they seem like a great idea and pretty cheap but they don't really mount well to an A series without making up some other brackets.

I just made a bench about 2 foot high from a load of old wood. With the engine on that its at a great height to work on.

Click the link to my project in my sig. Its a right bogge job with bracing and screws just put in anywhere but as long as it does the job who cares?

The pics on the latest post.

With the bench i made i bought a piece of laminated wood (like a kutchen top) to use as the top piece. This ways its easily wiped down and cleaned if you were doing a serious rebuild. You'd just have to clean the bench first before and during doing any work to keep it all clean and free from grit and grime.

I have an engine stand with a modified bracket so it can take early and late block types, if i remember i`ll get a pic. makes it much easier to work on as it spins on the stand
