Hi all,
I'm in the process of putting a 1989 Metro 1275 into my '87 Advantage, and though a nice new clutch would be a good idea while the engine & 'box was out of the car. A colleague of mine has given me a new-old-stock Verto clutch kit he has no use for, which is absolutely marvellous, and I've got the flywheel off the engine without drama, and stripped the flywheel/clutch assembly down on the bench.
I've noticed that the old clutch plate (driven plate) is 180mm in diameter, while the new one I've been given is 190mm dia. Giving the flywheel a good clean in the machined area reveals that the flywheel will take a 190mm plate (machined area 192mm in diameter), but unsurprisingly there is a slight change in surface finish (just detectable with a fingernail) where the old clutch plate ended at 180mm OD. Obviously the pressure plate is all new and suitable for the 190mm driven plate, but should I use the 190mm plate with the existing flywheel or will there be a risk of judder, or should I go and get a 180mm driven plate and use the existing flywheel and new pressure plate?
So basically, 2 options:
1) Flywheel with 192mm OD machined area but slight surface change outside 180mm + 190mm driven plate + new pressure plate suitable for 190mm
or
2) As above but 180mm driven plate
All help would be very gratefully recieved!
Yours
James

Chances are the friction plate originaly fitted to your engine is 180mm. Late 1275 engines (92 aonwards) used the 190mm friction plate.
You can use either friction plate as long as the friction surfaces of the flywheel and pressure plate show no signs of wear.
