Hi,

Im getting a full respray done on my mini but i am doing the prep work, i understand how to strip and rub everything down, then i etch prime, then prime, but i was wondering is Primer porous, my plan is to do a door or panel each weekend untill the whole car is primed, if i was to do this and the primer gets wet or damp because i dont have a garage, will this affect the overall job, Many Thanks

Yes i believe primer is porous, so leaving it out in the weather will affect the finish.

Yes primer is porous and not only that but it attracts and harbours moisture.

You probably wont notice a problem until either a freezing or red hot day when the moisture under the paint trys to freeze or boil and you'll get microblisters.

Ive just spoke to my body sprayer and he said that if i prime it all up and just put a coat of any paint on top of the primer, just for the time being and that will stop any damage occuring

Yeah thats right, the final coat of paint that you apply just to protect the metal against the elements is rubbed down to enable the car to be sprayed in the colour of your choice, good luck

ive always primered it all up, flatted the primer down, based it up then lacquered it. never had any problems at all.

if your painting in waterbase, its better to do it in a boothe. moisture can mottle the paint before you lacquer :D
