I had a problem with my lights not long ago, I was driving along and the just went out!
I flicked the swich a few times and they came back on. (I was on my way to a mini pub meet).
I got back in the car later and the lights wouldn't work. The side light and full beam would work but not the main beam.
Luckily there were still some members at the pub so they helped me out. (Cheers guys! (A of Herts mini club)).
To cut a long story short it turned out to be the switch. Took out switch and used a chewing gum wrapper to check the curcuits!!!
I replaced the switch and now all is well!

right i have just had this exact plroblem. what mien was, was that the switch does get hot when on for a while, if u take the switch out and have a look at the 3 male conectors at the rear of it, one will have meltted the plastic ever so slightly. now uf u take the switch apart and have alook inside i can see that when the conectore has melted and moved it wont connect with the slider.
what i did to solve it was changed the switch and the connector. This still didnt solve it as the other switch i had had the same problem, so i got the soudering iron on headed the connector until the plastic melted and then pushed the connector back in a little, iv had no problems with it now! hope thats helped

right, yesterday with the help of my dad we replaced the rear brake light with a new one and attempted changing the headlamp, but after unscrewing everything realised it was a sealed unit so we will have to order a new headlamp unit

IIRC
Early headlamp units (non halogen) had a mount gluded onto the back of the unit for the side light bulb holder. later units had a clear area that the bulb shone through and the bulb is fitted into a holder that clipped onto the headlamp plug.
You may need to fit a later type socket and sidelight bulb holder.
