Hi,

I am gutted!, I have stupidly done some black hammerite spraying of parts at the other end of my garage from where my fairly newly painted mini is situated and a thin film of the paint has covered it. It must have been in the air and settled onto the paint work..... :D

In the panic of realising what had happened I have washed and polished the bonnet to see how easily it comes off. With lots of polish and painstaking rubbing it does come off, thank god.

My questions are threefold,

1) should I keep polishing the entire car until sunrise before the Hammerite cures fully, or can I takle it over a number of days???

2) Is using polish the best way to remove the thin film from my paintwork?

3) Is there a rubbing compound suitable for the job?? My paintwork is a waterbased paint with a laquer finish. Will the hammerite react with the laquer??

All help appreciated, Please.......................

3m cleaner clay.

A little expensive but if you've oversprayed your fresh paint it's worth it. Plus it lasts ages and ages and removes all sorts of bits of crap off your paint.

I dont know how or why it work but its like magic.

Definately invest.

Thanks, much appreciated, I will buy it.

Where can I get some from? How do you use it, do you rub the clay over the paintwork lubricated with water?

Compounding will work but can be messy, time consuming and you risk rubbing through your fresh paint job.

The 3m cleaner clay should be available from any car detailing shop, search online, I bet you will find loads of places.. even Ebay possibly? Failing that get on yell.com (yellow pages) and search for local vehicle refinising suppliers in your area, they may stock it too.

Its just like hard playdo.. what I do with it is have a nice hot bucket of soapy water. The hot water makes the clay more malluable so you can get in all the corners and the soap lubricates it along your paint.

Keep rinsing it as it picks up allsorts. Its really top notch for this thing!

Jack is exactly right. A clay kit is exactly what you're looking for to remove the overspray safely without damaging your fresh paintwork.

Meguires do a clay kit that you can buy from Halfords. It contains everything you need to do the job.

Update.

Received the clay from i4detailing very quickly and tried it out tonight.

It will still take some time to sort the whole car but it really does work like MAGIC!

I am so pleased! Thanks again for the advice.............

Wahey!!

Are you using it with hot/warm soapy water?

It makes it very easy to mould and makes it alot easier to get all round the car.

Glad its worked for you!
