Steam Clean Engine Bay

I got some GUNK to clean my engine bay, in doing so my next door neighbor saw me and gave some advice, he said that he steam cleaned his engine bay (he has a VW of some sort) anyway i had a look and it looks fab.

Any ideas if i shld do this and weather it wld screw up the electronics?

well the steam will condensate when it cools on things, so just clean the engine block, they have a hose on it which is pretty direct so wouldn't have any over spray,

but it really depends on how dirty your engine bay it, if its really sludged up then steam isn't gonna shift it, just good old elbow grease :)

sam

hope it helps

If it is really stodged up, then a steam cleaner is the very thing that you want. NOT a cold water pressure washer, but a steam cleaner - cuts right through it leaving it 'squeeky clean' if that is what you are after.

That said, a plain old pressure washer will cut through the muck and leave an oily surface and dirty oily marks - which can be a good thing; the steam cleaner does get it very clean, but then it is so clean that it will start to rust....

I gave up using gunk years ago, pointless stuff. Get a pressure washer of somewort on it. Leave the engine runing and the heat from the engine will dry it out. Worst the generally happens (as long as you are being careful) is that you may need to dry the cap and the leads off.

Due to a recent oil pipe failure my engine bay was stinking, I managed to get the oil off using gunk and a hose pipe. I was suprised to find that the 15 years of filth that was on the engine block was just falling off with the hose pipe. I did spray 1 and a half bottles of gunk and one can of brake and clutch cleaner over it, it's now spotless. And all I did was spray on cleaning fluid and then rince off, I left it on there for around 5 minutes aswell.

Best method by far that i have been using recently is (this is without the engine in the car) A 99p can of choke/carb cleaner, and a toothbrush.

Brings most things up bristol fashion. messy though,
