Hi there.

I have just striped my 998CC engine out of my 1978 mini. I could not find any valve steam seals.

Should there be any?? If so where abouts will they be?

Thanks
Ross

Top of the valve guides, inside the springs.

You'll have to take the head and valve spings off to see them properly. They're pushed onto the top of the guides.

I agree, my 1980 - 1098cc didnt have any either. As stated, I only think late leaded and all unleaded engines got stem seals.

If your guides are still good, I would install these.

Viton Stem Seals
Available from here.

Look in parts sources and tech guides for info.
I have used them for awhile they are superior to the Rover ones.

but you will still need the grove type guides for them to fit and the early 998s dont even have the groove. you can get them changed and the new ones will be ones with grooves. Unfortunatly it is a job for a machine shop as the seat will need a quick cut to re centre it. some may say just lap it in and you may even get away with it. If you are wanting bronze guids then they may need reaming out after fitting as they close up more when fitted to the head.

Well, yes and no. Since these Viton Stem Seals have metal bodies they are quite a tight fit to the guide and with a little Loctite 609 Sleeve retainer, they will stay fixed to non-grooved guides. BTDT

I was under the impression that they were small o rings which fit inside a recess inside the valve guide - Similar to the landrover series one ioe engine and later rover ohv engines.

I used the same seals that Terry shows...they are working well.

How are those trailing arms of mine working Terry?

That is the early type you are thinking of, they were not used for long compared to the later type.

You can get the Dupont Viton seals in the UK (minispares) And you can also get Teflon ones too (Calver ST)
