My mini is an mpi. This afternoon I tried to remove a wheel in order to fit some slight spacers but when I tried to get the caps off the nuts with the black plastic gripper tool (that came in my jack bag with the car) I found it wouldn't grip. I've tried pliers but they slipped off and I tried to ease the caps off with a screwdriver but that didnt work either.

What else can I use to get the caps off? I've had a search on the minispares site for a new gripper tool but they don't seem to have any.

Any ideas?

If it is this type of nut then you aren't meant to remove the caps, i think they need an 11/16 socket and should take them off nicely :)

think hes talking about hte factory fit locking wheel nuts. These have a metal cover that is removed with a plastic "puller". They are still availiable from a MG parts supplier. Otherwise i just use a pick tool (90 deg) to get behind the covers.

Ryan.

yep she is talking about the factory fit nuts (with one locking nut on each wheel). I'll try an mg/rover parts place then. Not sure if I have a pick tool, I'll have a look in my dads tool box for something similar :) .

The caps stay on the normal nuts, if you try and prise them off they will never go back on right.

Perhaps Mini Spares or Somerford Minis will have a replacement tool? I'd give them a ring.
