I assume you're trying to set the static timing? or is this an engine you've built with a new cam etc?,.... is the head still on the engine?

Very Basically,.. with Piston number one (radiator side) at the very top of it's travel you should be able to see the rotor arm in the distributor pointing to the 2o clock position.

haven't you got a haynes manual?

How about this:-

Jack the car up
remove all spark plugs (Label them before removal)
put a small screwdriver in cylinder 1 (nearest the radiator)
Turn a roadwheel until you can feel the piston reach the top of its stroke via the screwdriver.

Easy!

Take the rocker cover off and the spark plugs out, now jack the car up until only one wheel is off the ground. Put it in third gear and turn the engine over by turning the wheel thats off the ground. Now keep a eye on number 4 cylinders inlet and exhaust valve (the ones furthest away from the rad), keep turning the engine until you see the valves rocking (one closing as the other opens). Find the point were there both shut (actually there both slightly open). This is top dead centre on the firing stroke of number 1 cylinder (the one nearest the rad) It's a good idea to mark where tdc is, place a screwdriver blade across the flange of the dizzy and block and tap it with a adjusting stick to marking it for future reference.

How does this mark TDC in anyway? It just marks the position of the dizzy and hence the timing (which he is trying to correct).

TDC is marked on either the flywheel or the crank pulley.

LMAO because when you start messing with it a little more than you've obviously done, it's good to know if you've advanced or retarded the ignition. Plus if you ever take the dizzy out you can get it back in the same place.

You want to stop laughing and read what you post - you might know what you are talking about but unfortunately what you have written in the latter part of your first post above is wrong and misleading.

Your second comment is correct to the mark you describe - it marks the dizzy position, I agree - but that is all it marks. It has no reference to TDC, as you said originally.

Take the dizzy out, turn the engine over and stop at any random point, replace the dizzy as per your mark - is the engine at TDC? No!
Will the timing be the same? Yes.
Will the timing be right? Depends on wether it was right before you marked the dizzy - which is what the OP is trying to achieve.

I'll stop laughing when yo stop trying to pick holes that aren't there, just sit back and learn something. So what your saying is that if you took the dizzy out and spun the engine over you couldn't get it back in the correct place because ?????

The dizzy would be in the correct place only if it was in the correct place before you made the mark. It would be in the SAME place, granted.

However - I said the engine wouldn't necessarily be at TDC which is what you have claimed the mark will show.

If a complete novice reads your post, sets the engine to TDC via the rockers then marks the dizzy at whatever position it is in, especially if they have just randomly refitted that dizzy, they have absoultely no useful reference from that mark.
They then come back on here, confident the engine is at TDC 'because the mark they made is lined up, and ask why the engine doesn't start/run.
We go round in circles because we don't know the timing is set at some random figure and he/she no longer has a clue when the engine is actually at TDC.
