okay, so i just bought an engine off of someone for a very reasonable price, and i just want to know what to do with it. The thing is its just a block, pistons and cam (no flywheel, oil pump, or anything really) IT is a 997 cooper engine. The Head is a 12g295 that is missing the valves and valve springs. I also have a stock 1979 mini 1000 engine, that has all of the parts which are missing off of this engine, as well as some twin HS2 carbs. My question is, what parts are interchangeable? would it be possible to mount this block to a mini 1000 transmission/flywheel/drop gears?

All A-series engines fit on all A-series boxes.
The 997 engine however, is the worst A-series ever made, better to put 998 crank rods and pistons in.

i dont think its worth to swap parts from ur 998 to the 997, i'd swap 295 head and use it on ur 998 engine..and bin the 997..

Oh yeah, I miss-read. Just rebuild the 998 with the 295 head.
Don't bin the 997, although it's not a popular engine, the blocks are fine for 998 applications and could be used for future rebuilds.

Yeah it's a rather good cam when put in a 998.
I have a print off from a Rolling orad run when Keith Calver was testing the 997 cooper cam.
The results showed that a 998 with a stage 1 kit and a 997 cooper cam can produce a good 40% increase in power. Which i think is quite impressive.

okay, well the thing with the engine is that it is rebuilt from the factory or new. It has been sitting for like 40 or so years. So i think it might be a decent engine. It also does not have an engine number and im not 100% what engine it is. The person that sold me it didn't know foresure, it was his brothers engine. BUT i have some numbers, they might not be right as i dont really know the 1's from I's and such. BUT here are the numbers.
crank- 12a596
pistons- m2064C411d7
block casting number is- 12a497
is the engine poor even if it is like new?

well i just measured the cylinders and the bore is 64.8 and the stroke is 77.5 ish. Was looking through books and such made me realize that this is not a 997 but a 998. How do i know if its a cooper or not? I read somewhere on a forum that if it has D shaped piston tops and the block casting is 12a497 that it is a cooper. Of course the engine number is not there.
