soo only past my test yesterday so ive been out driving abit in my mk1. anyways was traveling about 40mph when suddenly my accelerater pedal dropped and i could only slow down so much using my brakes. I then found a small lane to turn off and pull in but i couldnt changed down from fourth and its a very sharp bend so the only think i could think of was switch engine leave ignition on and coast round and slow up with brakes but whether i did the ryt think i dont no .
anyway turns out it was the spring on the carb. it had snapped where it attaches exhuast down pipe well atleast thats where i think it does ?

My old Mini City E once did that whilst I was charging up the hill to my parents house. So I just kept going until I switched off the ignition and came to a stop.
Yes and it was the spring on the carb which was to blame.

I always keep a few elastic bands in my 'recovery box' i keep in the boot. You never know when you may need them!

I had a throttle jam wide open on a 1380 mini years ago. You only discover the problem once you've reached the speed you wanted and start to back off the accelerator. It takes two or three seconds to realize what's going on and by then you're really going quite fast
. It was a cold damp night and the throttle had frozen open. Rather unsettling!
Since then I've never run bare K&N's in the winter.

Similar thing happened to me years ago in my 1098 on the M25 at about 80... had to get across 2 lanes of traffic to the hard shoulder using the brakes to manage my speed then coast to a halt with the engine off - a nut holding my pancake air filter had come loose and fallen into the carb wedging the butterfly open ... scary!!

i had this in the old 998 city i had but my cable was to blame as it had frayed and jammed.
i had to take a roundabout at about 55 as i only realised when i come to slow for the roundabout. luckily there was no one around as it was very early ours of the morning.
iirc my exhaust was also sat in the passenger seat as that had previously fell off
good times
