Okay well we've had a great 'Pink Floyd' thread, so I just thought I'd create one in tribute to the late 'Syd Barrett' who was instrumental in actually creating the Pink Floyd in the 1960's and their early sound, but who then left the band in 1968 due to damaging his brain due to the excessive use of drugs like LSD.

Here's a great tribute and one of my favourite early Pink Floyd tracks 'See Emily Play': -

But after listening to some of the tracks from his solo albums 'The Madcap Laughs' (1969) & 'Barrett' (1970), although you can tell his voice has changed due to his condition, he still managed to create some great songs and I believe it was David Gilmour (who was pretty much brought in to replace him in Pink Floyd) who helped him create or produce those albums?

Anyway quoting from the other thread, this is where it all went wrong: -

Syd on the right of this photo and his eyes give away his condition, as they sang on 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond', 'now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky': -

and again: -

There was briefly 5 members in 1968 with the arrival of David Gilmour to make up for Syd's bizarre behaviour. (But even Gilmour was an old mate of Syd's from their Cambridge days so he was equally upset about the way things were): -

Then just the 4 after Syd left some time in 1968: -

Apart from the early singles like 'Arnold Layne' and 'See Emily Play' he was also there when the first Pink Floyd album got released in 1967, called 'The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn' and it's said that The Beatles were in the studio next door recording their greatest concept album 'Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band' at the same time and that Paul McCartney came in and listened to the Floyd creating theirs and then commented on one of the top music shows at the time (possibly 'Ready Steady Go'), how everyone should buy the album by the new group called the Pink Floyd: -

But on their 1968 2nd album which was 'A Saucerful Of Secrets', Syd only got to create the final track on the album before leaving the Floyd for good: -

Here's a live version of it: -

Anyway I think he actually managed to create some better work than that after leaving: -

First up here's his first solo album which got released in 1969: -

Some beautiful and weird tracks there, which I have to admit to liking more than I should?

Then we come to his 1970 creation simply called 'Barrett': -

I simply love this one: -

This one is strangely mind blowing and addictive: -

Very upbeat and psychedelic and just seems to reflect the time: -

So there's a real bizarre collection of antiques which (like many an early Floyd classic) makes me think of the recent past when boys grew their hair long and wore paisley patterned shirts, whilst girls wore very short Mini Skirts and kinky boots. Mini cars (which we all love) were everywhere and they were building shiny new high-rise blocks of flats (tower blocks) to replace the back to back slums. Basically there was a great optimism for the future, which unfortunately we don't seem to have here in the UK any more?

There's also recently been a 'Best of Syd Barrett' album released too: -

The sad truth is that whilst playing some of these tracks in front of a live audience, he actually stopped half way through a song (I believe it was 'Gigolo Aunt'), put down his guitar and walked off stage and withdrew from society, never to be seen in public again and that was the end of his musical career too.

Anyway RIP Syd and have a great party with Rick whilst you're up there.

Well I'll let you take on that brilliant task as the only solo 'David Gilmour' album I have is 'About Face'. Which was fantastic. I really don't know why I haven't got around to collecting the others yet.

But to be honest, it's only now that I've discovered how good Syd Barrett sounds on his own, because I pretty much avoided his stuff and concentrated on collecting just the Pink Floyd instead.

So I'm now just blown away by some of Syd's tracks and I'm really going to have to get the albums.

He may have been slightly mad, but he was also a musical genius so shine on you crazy diamond!

I also can't help notice that this thread hasn't received the same level of viewing attention as the Pink Floyd thread.

Is it because I mentioned the fact Syd Barrett was brain damaged in the thread heading and most people just can't be bothered or are put off at the very thought?

Shame really because Syd was a legend.

they most likely dont know who he is ha syd was a legend , anyway i think lp are the best tho i still use the old sony record player in preference to a cd or mp3 i like it because it just feels more right almost to play a lp like how it would have peen played when Floyd were active and kicking out albums , there was none of these cds in those days just the good old stuff haah

hmmm i might do a Gilmore one not sure , i think it will get the amount of attention this thread has but who cares lol , Syd =Legend ,

see ya taffy!!

Well I've got to make do with CD's as my old Sony hi-fi needs new speakers and the CD player needs fixing. So I can't use the record player part of it as a result (no speakers), but it's still like new even though I bought it some 20 years ago.

So I play my CD's through our DVD player that's linked up to our 5.1 surround system. Then I get Pink Floyd belting out from all corners of the room. Or at least I did until our new baby girl got born last September, so now it's with the volume down.

I expect the neighbours are happy though, HA.

My fave Pink Floyd era is the Barrett era. I remember hearing Arnold layne for the first time and just thinking 'wow'

I'm my older years this opinion hasn't changed much at all, although I am a huge gilmour fan too. I've been busy reminiscing about the old days on a good website i found, www.ultimatefanpage.com/pinkfloyd - I'd recommend, it has possibly everything floyd-related you'd ever need! including my fave, a little pink floyd radio player .

Well I like all their differing era's really from the 1960's onwards, but Syd's voice was very distinctive so it was a great loss when he left.

Anyway I recently bought a new i-pod shuffle and so it's filled with Floyd/Barrett classics and so every Mini journey is a trip to the dark side of the moon or the heart of the sun.

Plus I can groove along whilst taking the dog for a walk too!
