Ive just fiited my new wheels and they are rubbing on the front so need to raise the ride height, I will be ordering hi-los, new cones etc this week as I dont think they have ever been changed, but Im not able to drive the car at the moment as its too low.

Can anyone give me a quick run down of the process of of fitting washers? Also what is the maximum you can fit? I know the ratio is 3:1 at the front and 5:1 at the back.

im probly wrong, but i saw a pic in mini mag, and the bloke had taken the trumpets out, and put washers between the trumpet and the knuckles, if you are fitting hi los i wouldnt bother putting the washers on the back, shouldnt rub on the back anyway! also, if your fitting hi los on the front, might be worth putting in new rubber cones, as this will lift the height a bit too, as they could be past their best if they havent been replaced before!

compress rubber

remove alloy trumpet

place washer(s) between knuckle joint and alloy trumpet

put back together

so a 5mm washer will raise you up 15mm

Excellent, thanks Mr Bungle. Do you know the maximum thickness of washer you can use?

from memory the shaft on the knuckle is about 1/2 inch long

remembering you need a bit to locate in in the trumpet

Excellent, I dont think it will need raising that much, hopefully it should be ok with a 5/6mm washer

This may seem a daft question but what size are the new wheels? Are they rubbing over bumps or when applying steering lock?

Widths of 5.5 and above normally cause problems fouling on the arches and they will need to be cut at the front of the front wheel arch.Appologies if im stating the obvious but you never know.

Cheers Ross.

The wheels are only catching on the actual arch so hoping by raising it slightly it should clear them. The wheels are 6" wide and if we do have to cut the wings then we will, but hopefully raising will sort it as it did on my last mini.

Anyone know the diamater of washer needed?

If you are getting the parts to do the job properly in a week or two, why not just fit your old wheels back on for a few days - the amount of work and aggro to put in the washers just for a couple of weeks isn't worth it!
