My car is making a high pitch whining noise which we think is coming from the fan, either the belt slipping or the bearings. Its only occurred since the car has covered some mileage over the past two days and I was giving it some high revs today (4000 max). I haven't noticed a difference in the way the car drives, its just whining as the revs drop after accelerating. Does this sound like a typical fan issue and any advice/tips would be much appreciated?

my first check would be to make sure the belt is tensioned correctly as a slack belt would produce the squeeling noise you have, after this if the noise is still present remove the belt and check the alternator bearings for roughness if all checks OK Try fitting a new belt, ive never had a waterpump bearing squeel so i dont think it could be that.

I have, only two weeks ago, easy to investigate with fan belt off and engine off I could spin the fan and hear the bearing grind.

Alternator bearings can also do it, and fan belt adjustment.

I'd start by adjusting fanbelt, consider replacing it as an old tired one will stretch easily.
Then look into alternator and waterpump bearings.

Out of interest, does uprating the alternator to a higher amperage remedy this? Mine does it too, which is incredibly annoying....

Possibly, or just get your old one overhauled by a good local auto electricians which is far cheaper than getting an exchange unit.
