my nearly new build (1000mile old) engine is leaking oil from the timing cover flange but I think that it is the half moon seal behind the flange joint, ie engine plate
if it is this seal is it possible to change it with the engine and gearbox attached and in the car. I hope so can't be arsed to take it out again THANKYOU IN ADVANCE

Absolutely no chance, engine out, gearbox off...

but check the source of the leak first, if you want I have some leak detector dye for just that job.... http://www.theminifo...x...=105084&hl=

Out of interest, as you look at the engine is it on the left behind fan belt etc? Only asking as i have a bad leak from that area but cant pin point where its actually coming from! Hope its not the same as yours as i dont wont to take the engine out!!

WOMWOM hello if you look at the timing chain cover left of the fan belt there is a seal if it is coming from there then it is not an engine out job
if the leak is left of that again it could be leaking from the timing cover joint,if it is left of that again then it could be the half moon seal.

Used this dye (leak detector) tonight and used a U.V.torch what a great piece of kit it is showed up all the starting places for very small leaks
that all end up in one place on the bottom of the sump, fully reccomend this product.

You can change this seal with the engine in the car, but you have to remove all the timing gear and the front plate go get at it

How ever, i forgot to say that chances are it is the crankshaft seal that is to blame. This needs lining up properly before you bolt the timing cover down. Oil can pour out of that seal is it is not correctly aligned. I have never seen the half moon seal to leak?!

Thanks for your reply sprocket but it definetly isn't the crank seal. I lined it up with the pully. With the dye in now it would seem like the
gaskets are porous both have dye right around them timing cover and end plate, bolts are all tight are you sure the half moon seal can
be done after taking off the front plate if so how because I have been told that it is between engine and box,and now it looks like the
transfer case gasket is also leaking with dye down the front joint and drips on the floor

Glad you've found the dye useful, I've found it invaluable.... case of when you have something like that in your armoury, you wonder how you managed before without it... generally many hours sitting under an engine wiping oil off gearboxes...
