So for the first time, I get to see if my 96 SPi is sick or not by using an ACT 1 that I won on ebay. My car runs pretty rich, dry sooty plugs and exhaust soot always coming out the back. I just figured it was a faulty Lambda sensor but...........No faults come up with any of the sensors, and after the engine comes up to temp 97 C. this is the live data info which doesnt mean a thing to me. So perhaps people can chime in and inform me as to what it all represents;

Idle Speed: 839-906
Stepper Position: 39 Steps
Vacuum Lvl: -148mmHg
Coolant Temp: 97 C but eventually went all the way up to 110 C and the electric fan never kicked on >_<
Throttle Pot: 0.5V
Purge Duty: 58%
Oxygen Sensor: 646-651MV (bounces around with lowest number 646 and highest 651)
Ignition Advanced: 9.0-27.5 (this too bounces around with set pattern, lowest i saw was 9.0 and the highest 27.5 with all kinds of number in between)
Oil Temp: HOT

When I tried using the "Tune" feature i get the message "Engine has a fault this test will be aborted" any ideas????

also when i first start up the ACT it askes me if i want to use CUDOS. what is that exactly??

From my experience with the Crypton ACT..... your Idle speed looks ok for an 'up to temp' car..... stepper position seems a little high though. Vacum level is very low.... this suggests that their is a leak in the vac tube from the throttle body to the ECU via the oil trap or in the other vac tube to the air filter housing, worst case is the MAP sensor in the ECU is fubar or needs 'drying out' on tha radiator over night. Coolant temp is way high. check your thermostat. The fact that the fan dont kick in suggests that the sensor on the bottom front of the rad is fubar. Throttle pot seems ok for an idling car as does the purge duty. Oxygen sensor sould be varing all over the place from 300 or lower to 600 plus so Id suggest either a fubar O2 sensor or a blocked and fubar cat convertor.... or more likly both. Ign advance looks normal as does the oil temp..... I would also make sure that the 'lost motion gap' is adjusted before test are run... see Haynes for how to do this.

I believe that CUDOS is Cryptons additional engine diagnosis system that incorporates gas analiser kit.... I just say NO to that bit.

Just my thoughts.. get back to us when you have had a look

Hi all, having read this thread I find my self in a similar position as not knowing how to get the best from a crypton ACT.
My car has had the stepper screw played with and left incorrectly set.

How do you set this up using the tuner? Is it a case of turning the screw while monitoring the live data until the correct figure is achieved? If so, what if the car idle speed is accceptable but the step position is well out?

I appologise for jumping on to the thread and hope any responses are helpful to all.

Cheers Steve.

I missed this, sorry.

The thing that stands a mile out to me is the vacuum level. That should be in the 500s. I would be looking at all the vacuum lines and making sure there is not a liquid lock in the MAP sensor in the ECU. The ECU has adapted around this fault.

I cannot remember if what is actualy displayed on the screen for vacuum level. What I mean is I dont recall the - but it may well have been there. The reading should be at least 500, 450 at the worst case. seaing as the stepper and idle advance are almost within limits I would deffo suspect that the map sensor is not getting a propper reading of the manifold pressure. This is why it is running rich :D and why the lambda sesnor is not swinging voltage as a result. it itself is showing rich, which would be right of your plugs are black.

as for the fan, it should come on at 105c and drop out around 97. check the wiring on the switch at the bottom of the rad, and then the fuse

easiest way is to set the ACT to show stepper position, then adjust the screw until the steps read ~30, 20 lowest and 40 highest. engine must be up to temperature. make sure the lambda sensor is working properly and check the coolant temp and air temop sensors with a thermometer and compare with the readings on the ACT, a couple of degrees difference I wouldnt worry about, if it shows 10 or more, you need to replace the sensors. Vacuum level should be around the 500, 450 at the very lowest
