Please give your topic a title that quickly describes your problem. Just putting 'Help my Mini doesn't work' is useless to anyone trying to help.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[b]Model:[1275GT]
[b]Year:[1981]
[b]Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):I can find plenty of guides with an advanced strobe light about setting ?degreez on ?revs but my strobe is a basic one with no dials or anything, and there are no markings on any of the timing teeth.
Basically which tooth do I set the timing to on tickover?
[b]Any non-standard parts that might be involved with the problem?[the car is running a standard 1.5 SU that has been modified by filing out under the plunger and the butterfly has been streamlined.
You need to find Top Dead Centre TDC with No1 Piston at the top of its compression stroke.
Be careful its on the compression stroke as it comes to the top of the cylinder twice in the cycle.
then once you have TDC simply mark the crank pulley and the casing with something like tippex.
plug in your timing light then point it at the marks you have made,once the engine is revved the marks will move apart.
you can then open the inspection hole on the flywheel cover check the marks on there and use them as a point to set your own marks.
Once everything it set up you have an easier way of keeping your timing set.
You will need to check that when setting the timing you may need to remove the vacuum pipe to the distributor.
Do you have a workshop manual?
no manual im afraid, I thought you could just set up the strobe and then move the dizzy untill the marks line up?
There is already a mark on the pully wheel and the timing guides (teeth things) i just dont know what tooth the line should be on on the strobe. hope this makes sense??? my mechanical skills are still limited.
Oh right
You have the later set up with the timing marks on the crank pulley.
First things first is the engine running?
not too bad but i havnt got to take it fro a proper run yet. I jst put a new engine(2nd hand) in, and replaced the carb and exhaust so im pretyy sure it willl need doing.
When i first put the engine in it wouldnt start so i guessed the timing just by turning rthe key, then the dizzy over n over untill i found a spot it would run in, just to drive it home.
I answered this earlier, but it's vanished.
You should be at 12 deg BTDC at 1500rpm with vac advance disconnected.
Pulley is marked for TDC on cylinder one, (the one nearest the radiator). So clamp your lights probe around cylinder one's plug lead and point down into the pulley.
The top tooth (big) one is 0, each tooth is then 4 degrees advance up to a maximum of 20 degrees I think.
Set to the 4th tooth from top.
Of course, 12BTDC is for a 998, I'm assuming yours is similar, though Haynes will confirm.
