Model:Austin 1000 Mini City E
Year:1989
Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible): hey guys just purchased a mini to do as a project. Only problem is i bought wihtout seeing and have come up with quite a job in front of me. This is my first mini project and have very little knowledge about minis but i am willing to learn and need alot of help!! The wiring loom has been basically torn out and the previous owner the tit that he was replaced it with little strips of wire here and there and it is quite a mess. Also inside he has taen out the ignition and replaced with a switch! I havent been able to get the engine going as yet because of this. What am i best doing to try and see what needs done or do i just start again wiht a loom from mini spares. I tried ebay for a loom but have had no luck anyone know anywhere i could get one

cheers James Scotland!

Any non-standard parts that might be involved with the problem?

haynes manual and a multimeter is always good for sorting these problems out

first work out what works and what dosnt

then look through the diagram and see if anything that dosnt work has something common with something else that dosnt work, i.e a relay.

use the old meter out to check powers and grounds, and even resistance to check for poor joints.

if it rearly is a mess, then maybe your best bet is to buy a new loom, they aint cheap, and can take some time fitting them properly, and eleiminating all the gremlins that come included :D

Good advice in preceeding post. I bought a new wiring loom from a company called Auto Sparks http://www.autosparks.co.uk/
I would recommend them if you do decide to go for a new loom. They will make your loom up to standard spec, or to your exact requirements. Everything works on mine too.
Replacing the loom is not a pleasant job if your car is still complete, but if you are doing a full rebuild, it is worth considering - especially if someone has been cutting into it in places.
Best of luck

I just drew this in about 30sec (as you can tell) If you remove any wires from the coil and dizzy and fit just these you can temporary start the engine.

That first loom on E bay is only the front part, with some bits cut off, and it's from a Mini with separate solenoid. The second loom is from an an injection Mini. Neither are suitable for a 1989 Mini.

I'd investiage the current wiring loom, and remove all the extra bits of wire the previous owner has added. See what you're left with. It might be possible to salvage the old loom, if not get yourself another one. Either new from autosparks or keep your eye on E bay for a suitable one.

Just wondering how long it took you to do this? I'm going to take some time off work once my new loom arrives and just wondering how long I'll need! :)

Replacing the loom is not a hard jod, if you've never done it before it could take up to a day. If you know what you're doing you could probably do it in about 2 hours. Moving the fuel tank is probably the hardest part but you might even get away without doing that.

mine took me a week to do, but thats because of installing an alarm system deep inside the loom, and repositioning components so wire extensions ect.
