As you face the front on the car there was a lower engine steady fitted on some models. On the right hand side at the bottom. Im trying to fit one of these and have got the bracket fitted to the gearbox just fine. However when I put the bar on and move the other end of the bar to the subframe there doesnt seem to be anywhere to attach the other other end of the bar? :tumble:

I dont suppose anybody has a picture of one of these fitted they could post for me? Its a new subframe so im thinking that maybe it just hasnt had the hole drilled in the first place that the other end of the bar would attach to?

Any help greatly appreciated!! :bah:

<<There was something else here, more of a rambling thought than anything useful>>

Forget all that, I'm probably thinking about different steady bars. Are you talking about the standard steady under the transfer gear case?

Hmmm now you have got me thinking. I thought it went on the side near the rad if that makes sense. Only reason I say that is that the engine i have fitted already had a bracket fitted there identical to the bracket i have in my kit. However im looking in my Moss catalogue at the moment and it lists it as

Lower Off-side Rear steady bar

so that would make it the clutch side i guess. Ill have to have another look I think under the transfer gears as you have suggested and see if it fits better that side?

Hi Stewart,

The only standard bottom steady i can think of was on the clutch side. The dog bone shaped steady bar runs form the bracket on the gearbox as stated ( but now probably on the wrong side) to a mount on the front of the front subframe? this was quite difficult for me so i advise fitting this end first !

Ryan.

If you need the bracket Stu, let me know, I've just taken one off an engine.

Stewart,

Photo 1 shows location of gearbox bracket in relation to sump plug,
Photo 2 shows the other end of steady bar. This end locates in the front subframe, in the return - grille out job.
The bar itself is similar to the top engine steady, but with the "holes" being in the same direction - the top one has a 90 degree twist.

I have seen plenty of cars without this steady bar, my last 1380 being one of them...

Apologies for the picture quality - its a lowered car so theres not alot of room there for a lamp , camera plus my arm!
by the way for anyone thinking thats a lot of oil on my engine, its waxoyl lol...

There's been 3 lower steady bars used. that one from by the sump plug and 2 from off each side of the gearbox facing backwards. you only need to drill a hole to in the frame to fit the rearward ones.

Ah ok Ethel thx for that. Ive definatly got the near side rear one but i couldnt figure out were it attached to the subframe as there wasnt a hole present. But if i have to drill a hole then thats fine I just didnt want to start drilling and then find i had put it in completly the wrong place.

Thanks everybody for all you help!
