I hope I am posting this in the right section?

I am looking to buy my first mini and there is one on ebay that I am interested in. I have asked the seller a few questions and he has told me that the gearbox has that usual leaking problem but it is very minimal.

So my question is, should I be worried about this? would it be a simple fix? or would it need the gearbox replacing?

I understand that this will be hard to answer as we don't know the extent of the problem but would be greatful of any advice you can give as this will be my first mini and I don't want it to be a nightmare.

Thanks

"That usual leaking problem" could mean anything and is often the sort of evasive reply you get from E-bayers who know full well what the problem is, but don't really want to tell you or say they are not mechanics and don't have a clue.
I'm not saying all e-bay sellers are like this and I would press him to say exactly where the leak is.
The most common gearbox leak on later Minis is from the remote gear change rod. This is easy to fix, involves removing a roll pin and replacing the seal, and costs a few pounds.
Next are the drive shaft seals which are probably about £5 each, but require the steering ball joints to be parted so the hub and shaft assy can be moved outboard allowing access to the seal, so obviousley a bigger job.
Sump plug may be leaking, providing the threads are OK a new washer will cure this for a rew pence.
Any other leak in the gearbox area will probably require the removel of the unit to cure and so expensive in terms of labour, although gaskets and seals are quite cheap.
If you can't get a straight answer out of the seller, I would try to view the car before the end of the auction. In fact I would view it anyway, even if it's a long way off as it's a fair bet there will be other things wrong.
