Year: 1979
Hi Everyone, only just joined these forums, but have been reading for a while.

I started work again on my mini and coming to start it it just made a clicking noise, so after reading a few threads on here, i had the starter motor stripped and cleaned (new bushes etc), put that back on, still just clicking!

So i did a little bit more reading, and some said that it may be the solenoid, so i have got a new solenoid and replaced that, but it is still doing exactly the same thing! I am clueless as to what to try next. The battery is pretty much dead so i have been using jump leads from my other car.

Does anyone have any ideas please???

Check the earth leads from engine to body and from boot floor to batt, make sure they are all clean and secure.

Make SURE that you are in neutral.
Ensure that the battery is charged.
Turn the ignition on. (Not to the final position, but just so that the red llight is on).
Get a decent thick piece of wire.
This next bit might make you jump if it does start - it scared me, but there was no electrical shock!
You're going to touch the wire across the solenoid terminals.

On my 1989 998, this was the one at the back of the picture and then the other end to the big nut.
Expect a spark.
In my case, the car starts.

Oh hang on, you said you changed the solenoid? (must learn to read.)
Try it any way?

i had this problem and i sorted mine out by replacing my ignition relay, its normally located in the drivers side under the bonnet near the windscreen.
