Before i go ahead and buy, i was just wondering if a pre-engaged motor is worth the extra money.

I have asked for advice else where but i was told that it doesnt really matter..

So i would just like to get more opinions.

Thanks

Joe

You don't get a choice. early minis used inertia and later ones used pre-engaged

EDIT... Brainy bods feel free to correct me.

The pre-engaged is better in terms of torque output.

However you will need the correct one to match your flywheel ring gear (or change that as well) and you may need to do some re-wiring depending on what your car was fitted with before.

also note that the gears on the flywheel will wear out quicker if the wrong starter motor is used, so effectively you would have to change that too

I'd just stick with what you have fited already. Both will do the job, and if you stick with the same type you won't have to do any re wiring.

It might be more sensible to pick your clutch first. If you're building a fast road/race engine you'll probably want a pre-verto clutch, normally this uses an inertia starter.

If you are buying a steel flywheel you can have whatever ring gear you please, also, a ring gear can be easily replaced on any cast flywheel easily for either type you please.

The pre engaged starter is by far the superior unit, especialy if you have a high compression engine

The inertia starter is pants

I think like some of you have suggested, it would be better for me to pick the clutch and flywheel first.

But i also like the idea of no re-wiring :)
I will just see how it goes.

Thanks for all your help everyone!
