I take it you mean MGB not MBG? If so, to quote a reply to the Montego Turbo Engine thread...

First question to ask yourself is why? You'd be better putting a more modern engine in, if you really want to go down the transplant route.

(TOMKIDD... hope you dont mind me quoting you :P)

Easy answer is NO!!!

MGB is rear wheel drive.

(Also its a bleeding heavy lump of iron)

I can't think of any reason why you would want to fit one?

The B series is a LOT bigger than the A series, it weighs an absolute ton(I did my back in lifting one)

The engine is Rear wheel drive, I don't think I've ever seen a front wheel drive version?

The easy answer is that it won't fit and IMHO there is no good reason to even try and fit one.

Even if you had one lying around, it simply wouldn't be a viable option to fit.

If the poster does have one lying around then it would be best to sell it and use the money to fund a more worthwhile venture.

If that was the case, it would be cheaper and quicker to buy a running 998cc and drop that in

wow. some people on here are snappy i was only curious?! seeing as i think about mini/car related stuff constanly it was just one of my thoughts as i have an engine and was just wondering what it would be like in one, ino its rear wheel drive but it could be converted, im sorry for shocking you with my obvious stupidity you offer valid points however a more polite manner would have been appriciated not telling me asif im stupid because im not!

LOL ignore them Gaz!!!! the simple answer is, althogh it is a similar looking engine, i believe it is a north south mounted engine rather than an east west (transverse) engine like a mini. and i could be wrong, but i think the gearbox is bolted onto the back and not underneath like a mini. as others have said, it is also a rear drive engine. am sure it COULD be done, but would involve turning your mini into a rear wheel drive, you would also have half the engine inside your cockpit lol. there are simpler engine conversions about. But if you want to do it!!! go for it

I'm sure it has been done, in a fashion. The B Series was used in the Austin 1800 in a very similar arrangement to Mini.

Yes, Ethel is right the B Series engine as used in the MGB was also used in the Issigonis designed Austin/Morris 1800 (Landcrab) range of transverse front wheel drive cars with gearbox in the sump like the Mini. A few found their way into Mini's in the 1970's but the extra weight spolit the handling. twin carb SU's were fitted to the upmarket versions giving similar power outputs to an MGB. The 1800's (in production from 1964-1975) also used Hydrolastic suspension and were used with some success in rallies as BMC works cars.
A transverse FWD 6-cylinder 2200cc E Series version was launched in 1972 which was also later used in the replacment Princess range but would be far too wide for a Mini!!! However the Princess gearbox has been used in Mini's a few times to install a transverse Rover V8 engine!!! (See Link below)
