Although I am sure the boot mounted reversing lamps are illegal after a certain year.
I realise this is a slightly old topic but does anyone know what year this is or why? Is it legal due to position or brightness? Can a lower wattage bulb be fitted?
Is it illegal to have it wired up or just to use it on the highway? (I.e. can I wire it to the gear selector but have a separate dashboard switch to disable it whilst on the roads?)

Sorry as the IVA manual is my bedtime reading, there was no requirement until the IVA was introduced to have reversing lights fitted, there is now.
These are the specifications
1. They must be operational
2. The correct number must be fitted to the vehicle (Table 1)
3. They must emit white light.
4. They must be positioned to face the rear
5. They must operate by selection of reverse gear, or be fitted with a telltale warning device.
6. Where two lamps are fitted they must be fitted symmetrically and be a matched pair.
There is a minimum requirement of 1 & a maximum of 2
They must be white, face the rear & be within 250 & 1200 mm of the floor.
That is for vehicles being submitted for IVA that has nothing to do with vehicles currently on the road, there is currently nothing in the MOT manual http://www.motuk.co....section_one.htm about reversing lights.
However I am unable to find a link, but I was always led to believe that like the IVA vehicles if reversing lights are fitted they must either be switched by selecting reverse gear or a manual switch with a tell-tale.
