O.k I'm building a 1293 A+ engine and have got to the point of doing the timing. However, both the sprocket on the cam and the crank are very tight to get over the shaft. I've tried tapping with a hammer but both go on only a few mm then just don't budge. I don't want to be hitting it too hard with a hammer. Would it be o.k just to run over both the shafts with a bit of emery cloth? Its a SW5 cam and swiftune duplex timing kit and a Minispeed crank. Has anybody had this problem before?

It was all going so well!!

You need to fit both sprockets and the chain at the sametime/all at once. Don't go emerying anything.

I think the guide in Minimag said to use a bit of emery, or a half-round file to get the sprockets to fit. Shouldnt take much though.

Try putting a big socket over the crank and flywheel threads and tapping the hammer on this, it'll help it go on in a straight line.

Oooh now I'm torn! I've tried it altogether/all at once and individually and didn't make any difference. I'll give tapping it with a socket first but is so tight think i'm gonna have to give it a little rubbing with some emery cloth. if I take it easy and only take of the minimum should be o.k then by the sounds of it...famous last words!!

I'll have another go tomorrow before going in with any emery cloth and let you know the results. Thanks for the advice

Misread that one, yes you can emery the crank and cam to get rid of any high spots etc.

however i did have to nip a bit off the new cam woodruff key.

but both sprockets were damn tight at first!!

heat a bath of fresh engine oil and your gears in a saucepan to about 150 degrees celcius and using a set of thick gloves and tongs push them on, other than that it might be the woodruff keys not being pushed in or aligned correctly, try seating them in the crank and cam with a gentle tap with a small hammer use a peice of soft metal like copper to prevent denting,

i have the same gears from swiftune, they are a tad tight, but aluminium lukily expands alot more than steel when heated, the crank gear might need a bit of a clean with emry

Rock on! This is sounding mush more positive! Now if only Minispeed had sent me the woodruff key with the crank I'd be able to crack on with it tomorrow!!! O and the pulley would've been nice!! Seriously, sent off my block, crank, pistons, flywheel, head and crank pulley 5 weeks ago for machining etc and it comes back on the shoddiet pallet with the worst packing and some bits not even there!!!!! Still, the machining and general finish does look good at least.

Try the sprockets in place without the woodruff keys in place and then use emery paper till there a nice push fit, check the woodruff keys and clean off any burn is necessary and then hopefully it should all fit together without force.

i'd emery the (cheaper) sprokets rather than the (more expensive) nose of the crank or the cam.

K, I've emeryed(?) the nose of the crank and a bit inside the sprocket and they now fits. Didn't have to take much off, basically like Kerrin said just a shine up and after working them on and off a few times. Now to time it in! Good times.
Cheers guys :)
