Hi All

i've done a quick search and haven't found anything.

I've got thedisc breaks that were standard from around '84 on, i've taken the discs off along with the calipers but i wanted to take the drive shafts out of the hub so i can clean the hub up. will i need to replace the bearings and stuff if i do?

The whole unit is off the car the shaft has been removed from the engine end.

attached should be a photo i've what i've got, i hope i've explined it in enough detail, let me know

cheers

Assuming the castle nut and the tapered washer has been removed, the drive shaft should be removed by
1) The proper way, By using a hydraluic press to press the drive shaft out of the bearing or
2) Use a hammer! This WILL damage the treads on the end of the drive shaft so be carefull!

Saying this many many times they will pull out quite easily.

ah ok the castle nut is off and the washer as well, i've got a rubber hammer so i might try that.

i just didn't want to smash the bearing all to pieces

If you want to leave the drive shaft and CV attached to each other then simp[ly remove the castelated hub nut, conical washer and drive flange and disc then pull the hub from the shaft. It may need gentle persuasion but not much.

If you want to remove the CV from the driveshaft then remove the gaiter and whack the back of the CV with a suitable hammer. Keep a tight hold on the driveshaft and mind your toes when the CV parts company (try doing it over an old blanket or on grass as it will save the CV from getting damaged should you intned to re-use it)

Do you realise you only have half of the inner joint on each end of those shafts? They will need to be removed in a similar way to the above to replace with new joints if needed.

yeah i was hoping to keep the CV joint and drive shaft together and just separate them from the hub. since that photo was take the drive flange and disc have been removed.

Yeah i did realise i only had half the inner joint the other half in still in the gear box. would you recomend replacement then? are thery not supposed to pull apart so easily then? excuse my ignorance

If you have both halves then fine - I thought you had bought this set up as shown and may not have the other half of the joint. Technically they werent designed to be taken apart that way but there is nothing to really stop you doing it.

It is possible if you have the hub nut etc off that the CV has got seized to the inner race of the bearings. I would replace the hub nut alone until it is flush with the end of the thread then hold a sturdy lump of wood against it and then give it a good bash with a hammer.

hi all

that worked a treat, a few slaps with a persuader and all over.

the next job is to take the ball joints off does anyone know what size socket i need? is it the same size as the tower bolts in the front subframe? something like 1" and 5/16"?

Yep 1.5" A/F and it will need to be a deep one, essentially a proper ball joint socket.
